Pediatric Concussion Management:
The Manitoba Experience

This talk will outline the creation of the Pan Am Concussion Program, Canada’s first provincially funded multidisciplinary pediatric clinic. The talk will describe how the clinical experience has influenced our research priorities and how our research findings have changed clinical practice. Dr. Russell will outline research findings related to health-related quality of life outcomes, mental health outcomes, academic outcomes, targeted treatment, risk factors for protracted recovery, as well as describe current research.

Dr. Kelly Russell completed a PhD in Epidemiology specializing in sport injuries at the University of Calgary. After finishing a postdoctoral fellowship in sport-related brain injuries at St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, she joined the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Manitoba as an Assistant Professor in September 2012. She is also a research scientist with the Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba and the Public Health Director of the Canada North Concussion Network. Her research interests are primarily related to the identification and management of sport-related concussion, predictors of protracted recovery as well as psychosocial outcomes following concussion. She is the 2016 recipient of the Rh Award in Health Sciences, which awards one early career scientist for outstanding contributions to scholarship and research.
