Athletic Therapy: Education

The CATA determines the requirements and administrates the national exam to become a Certified Athletic Therapist in Canada, CATA(C).

Individuals wishing to certify as an Athletic Therapist must attend a degree from an accredited institution, of which there are currently seven in Canada: University of Winnipeg,University of Manitoba, Mount Royal College, Sheridan College, Concordia University, Camosun College and York University. An accredited institution will offer the prescribed courses: Human Anatomy, Biology, Human Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Psychology, Neuroscience, Pathology, Biomechanics/Kinesiology, Emergency Care, Assessment and Rehabilitation, Therapeutic Modalities, Taping Techniques, Nutrition and Health.

In order to write the certification examination, candidates must be members in good standing of the CATA and their Provincial organization (MATA); have completed their degree; and a 1200 hour internship program.

The internship is divided into 600 hours of clinical and 600 hours of on-field experience. Clinical placements include experience in assessment, planning rehabilitation programs, utilizing therapeutic modalities, and exercise prescription to return the patient to a full and active lifestyle. On-field placements provide experience in pre-event procedures and immediate care of injuries.
